Healing Effects on Venous Ulcers

Healing effects of low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields on venous ulcers were tested in a double-blind study (Ieran et al., 1990) on 44 patients and the results were published in Journal of Orthopaedic Research.

In 90 days, half of the patients completed pulsed magnetic therapy, and the remaining 22 patients served as a control group. After the therapy, long-term effects of pulsed electromagnetic field were assessed for a period of one year in scheduled check-ups.

The success rate of healing was much greater in the group that underwent pulsed magnetic therapy. At the same time, none of ulcers in this group worsened, and only 25% of them reappeared.

In the control group, on the other hand, ulcers of half of the patients reappeared, and the state of four patients even worsened in in the first 90 days.

Low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy thus not only speeds up healing of venous ulcers, but its positive effects also persist long after the completion of the therapy. It is therefore suitable as an additional therapy for patients with leg ulcers.
