Possibility of Cervical Osteoarthritis Treatment
Possibility of cervical osteoarthritis treatment using low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy with 0.1-64 Hz frequencies and 40 μT intensity was the objective of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that the research team of S. T. Sutbeyaz (2006) conducted.
The research team focused on the possibility of influencing pain and improving range of motion and function of cervical spine in 34 patients. Pulsed magnetic therapy was applied to the whole body with flat applicators.
A total of 18 randomly selected patients underwent the real treatment – 30-minute-application twice daily for three weeks.
Remaining patients served for comparison in the control group and were thus treated with fake pulsed magnetic therapy device.
After the complete course of treatment, the active group reported significant pain relief. In contrast, the placebo group showed no change. Similar positive effects of pulsed magnetic field were reported in the other evaluation indicators – improved range of motion as well as function of cervical spine.
Not only did pulsed magnetic therapy significantly mitigate pain in patients suffering from cervical osteoarthritis, but it also improves the range of motion of cervical spine. It is therefore identified as appropriate complimentary treatment in this study as well.
