The Possibility of Improving the Functionality of Articular Cartilage
The possibility of improving the functionality of articular cartilage with the assistance of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was tested by a medical team of Gobbi Albert (2014) on 22 patients who have been diagnosed with early stages of osteoarthritis.
There is a growing interest for pulsed magnetic therapy among sports therapists for its analgesic and healing effects. These therapeutic effects may be key in the early stages of osteoarthritis which are primarily about preventing further damage to the articular cartilage.
Patients underwent a 45-day pulsed magnetic therapy after the initial examination. They were subject to applications four hours a day. The effect of pulsed magnetic field was evaluated after one year and then after two years.
One year after the therapy, a significant improvement was found based on the examination in all the outcomes evaluated.
The study confirmed that pulsed magnetic therapy reduces the symptoms of osteoarthritis and improves knee function and general physical health of patients. After two years, the effects have disappeared so regular treatment is recommended.
